Today, while the rest of us are enjoying the company of our friends and family, courageous Walmart workers are on strike across the country. Watch this video on their courageous actions.
These workers are on strike to protect their most basic right: The right to speak out for what they believe without intimidation or the threat of retaliation.
Time-and-time again, when Walmart workers have come together to call on the company to address issues with understaffing, scheduling, wages, benefits, safety and just plain respect in the workplace, the company has retaliated against them and attempted to silence them.
Workers like Jerry Paladin have been punished for speaking out. A husband and father of two young children, Jerry has worked at Walmart for six years. He was injured on the job earlier this year. When he went to speak with his supervisor safety hazards in his store, his supervisor ignored him.
But Jerry didn’t back down. He and his co-workers signed a petition calling for the store manager to address broken equipment and to make employee safety a priority.
After receiving the petition, the store manager yelled at Jerry and threatened him, saying “The next time we have to talk about safety, heads are going to roll.”
No one should have to face this type of intimidation in the workplace for speaking out. Let’s make sure that this time Board Chairman and Walmart heir Rob Walton hears the calls for change from workers like Jerry.
Sign a letter to Rob Walton demanding that he listen to his workers and put an end to illegal retaliation.
Making Change at Walmart
Brief aan directie Walmart:
Respect Your Employees Right to Speak Out
Sign below to tell Rob Walton to end retaliation against workers who speak out for change.
Dear Rob Walton & Walmart Executives:
For over a year, Walmart workers and workers throughout Walmart’s supply chain have been coming together to speak out for change. They have called on the company to ensure safe working conditions, adequate hours, sufficient staffing, a living wage, regular schedules, and above all, respect in the workplace.
Instead of listening and learning from your workers, you have sought to silence them and retaliate against those who dare to speak up. Warehouse workers who work for your contractors have also experienced retaliation for speaking out. Now, your workers and our communities have had enough.
Walmart makes close to $16 billion in profits and its executives brought home more than $10 million each. Six members of your family, who own half the company, are worth more than the bottom 42% of American families combined. Those profits are made by keeping all workers in poverty.
We call on you to immediately end your illegal retaliation against Walmart workers who speak out for change and mandate your warehouse contractors to do the same. You must improve standards for Walmart’s retail, warehouse and supply chain workers now.
